The acquisition of Navalshore enables UBM to be right in the heart of the Brazilian maritime industry, one of the major growth sectors. Furthermore, the event has many synergies with the UBM’s largest trade show in Brazil, the Intermodal South America show in which the maritime sector is also highlighted.
UBM will add to Navalshore all its expertise in organizing important trade shows for the maritime industry. The company is an organizer of Marintec China, not only the biggest event of the sector in China but also in Asia and the definitive biennial meeting point of the maritime world; Sea Japan, the most important event of the maritime industry in Japan; China International Boat Show, the major event for boats and ferry ships in China; Cruise Shipping Miami, the largest and most important annual cruise maritime industry show globally.
Joris van Wijk, Director of UBM Brazil, said: “Navalshore is the opportunity to get closer to a market that has been showing impressive growth figures in Brazil. The show allows us to keep our company strategy of investing in markets and in countries that present great business opportunities. "
He continued: “Our goal is to make Navalshore grow at the same rhythm of the industry, enhancing the partnership that has been established over the history of the event. The show offers a unique ambience focusing on the growing business opportunities.”
Marcos Godoy Perez, one of the founders of Navalshore, who continues to remain connected to the event and owner of Portos & Navios Magazine (Revista Portos & Navios) said: "Navalshore and the Brazilian maritime industry has a lot to gain from this partnership. UBM, a company with international experience and track record in major events, will be making a great contribution in expanding the business within Navalshore. This is the time to expand the show because marine construction is having an unprecedented growth in Brazil, new shipyards are coming into operation each year and the country needs to enlarge its supplier base. Navalshore, the maritime industry meeting point in the country, now gains a new dimension. "
Another co-founder of Navalshore, Rosângela Vieira, who also stays with the new company emphasized: "Time has come for the Brazilian maritime industry to globalize. This partnership represents an important gain for the show, and is indicative of what is happening at shipyards in Brazil who now receives technical support from international partners which had previously been categorized as international competitors. The same process seems to be happening in the marine equipment industry. With UBM, Navalshore will be strengthened in it’s the relations with national shipyards and foreign suppliers and give more visibility to products and service suppliers from around the world."
Michael Duck, Director of Marintec China, a UBM Asia tradeshow said: “I am very pleased that we have now a significant presence in the maritime sector in Brazil with Navalshore. The Marintec branding which will come alongside Navalshore is well-known to all in the global maritime industry and so will bring to the show international exhibitors who want to enter the market. I have no doubt that the growth patterns in Brazil will continue due to the economic success the country is showing to the world.”
The market
Brazilian maritime industry is experiencing a growing business volume. According to Sinaval (National Union of the Industry of Naval Construction and Repair and Offshore), Brazil has now the fourth major oil tanker order volume in the world, after Korea, China, and Japan. Till April 2010, the number of orders amounted to 132 projects, which include oil platforms, oil tankers, bulk ships, container ships, tow boats and tugs.
The income of the 28 shipyards associated to Sinaval in 2009 totaled R$5 billion and they plan to end 2010 with R$5.5 billion. According to the Union’s forecasts, the naval industry employs around 300,000 people in Brazil.
The increasing demand comes from oil and gas exploration and the recovery of cabotage. 17 projects for new shipyards are under consideration and five others are looking into ways to expand their capacity.
The strong growth of the industry stems from the positive reaction to the increasing demand for oil and the launch of the new stage of Prorefam, Petrobras fleet renovation program. Petrobras orders are valued at US$17 billion in the first stage which will end this year. By 2012, the invested amount could surpass US$40 billion.
Additionally, there is the Promef, program organized for the modernization of the oil tankers flee of Transpetro, a Petrobras subsidiary. Started in 2005, the program entails 49 ship orders at US$4 billion.
Oil and gas sector is not the only factor causing the increase in marine production in Brazil. Cabotage also demands a major fleet to accommodate the intensification in the use of containers and bulk transportation.
